Acapulco Gold made an incredibly official entrance into our collective consciousness in the 1965 edition of the Oxford English Dictionary. The book purportedly describes, “a special grade of pot growing only in the vicinity of Acapulco… [that] has a potency surpassed by few of the green varieties and usually comes at slightly higher prices or in short weights.” (^could be BS, taken from wiki.) From there this mexican wonder drug exploded in western pop culture, inspiring the likes of David Crosby, John Lennon, the band Rush, Robert Plant, and more recently MF Doom and Devin the Dude. It has also earned mention on SNL in 1975, and has been used as the title of Edwin Corley’s book imagining corporate america’s preparation for legal marijuana.
